Spectacular Patagonia

The Draft Itinerary

A few days in Santiago to explore this wonderful city and then a flight south to the seaside town of Puerto Montt.

We will explore this picture perfect village before boarding our ship for a spectacular passage through the fjords. This is one of the unforgettable cruise journeys of the world - The views are exceptional.

At Puerto Natales we have a couple of days to explore this charming village. We can also use this town as our base to visit the cave of the prehistoric giant bear-like creaturee called the Miladon.

Puerto Natales is the "gateway" to our next World Heritage site, the unbelievably beautiful Torres del Paine National Park. Here magical lakes are surrounded by enourmous granite spires. The lush countryside is populated with Guanacos (a proud and attractive cousin of the Llamas) and the lakes teem with a multitude of bird life.

We plan to spend several days walking and/or driving around this fantastic place.

The photo opportunities alone are stunning!

From amazing scenes such as Torres del Paine in the snapshots, we travel to El Calafate in Argentina. This is the access point to Glaciers National Park. Here condors soar over ice-wracked terrain from another era. The Perito Moreno Glacier is the only glacier in the world - outside Antarctica - that is still growing. The power and visual impact is amazing. There will also be time to have a walk on the glacier & take in the Upsaala Glacier and to sail amongst icebergs floating in frigid waters. Then it is on to El Chalten.

This will be our base for some days as we walk through grass covered alpine meadows & wonderful forests. There are carpets of wild-flowers, babbling brooks & towering above, huge awe inspiring towers. The walking is easy and the rewards outstanding! This area is one of the most beautiful walking spots in the world. We will base ourselves in a local hostel and participants can do single-day and multi-day trips. From Chalten one can walk to the Climber Base Camp right at the foor of Mt FirzRoy. In another special day one can stroll to the Base Camp of Cerro Torre. This amazing granite spire is truly magnificent.

Every person who walks the dry, well graded trails around these fabulous peaks leaves with memories that endure for the rest of their lives.

After El Chalten we drive South across the Pampas. This provides a chance to see Flamingos, Rheas and a wealth of other wildlife. On reaching the coast we will take a very short ferry ride across the straits of Magellan to Tierra del Fuego. We will have three days exploring this amazing and historic area. Our Accommodation will be at Ushuaia.

From here we take another short ferry ride to Punta Arenas. Here we have ouyr last three days as a group. We finish with a farewell dinner on Fri 30th January 2004. The next day the group disperses to start their individual journeys. Some might stay on a while, others might head for Inca areas and more. The beauty of this airfare is that it is continent based and not mileage. A huge variety of options is available. From Sth America you return home via Europe and Asia. Truly a trip never to be forgotten.
